Mental fitness, and why elite athletes train it while you do not

You train your body. You lift, you run, you stretch, you track your recovery. You are disciplined about it.
And you are training half of what determines how you perform.
Every elite athlete I have ever worked with trains something else alongside the physical, and most people outside of sport have never heard it named. It is called mental fitness, and at the professional level it is not optional. It is the difference between the athlete who executes under pressure and the one who has all the talent and cannot access it when it counts.
If you are reading this thinking, I do not actually know what mental fitness is, good. I am glad you are here.
I am going to walk you through exactly what I do with my athletes and my patients, and how you can start tonight.
FIRST:
What mental fitness actually is.
It is not positive thinking. It is not talking yourself into feeling better. It is not a mindset poster.
Mental fitness is the trained ability to notice what is happening inside you, and to shift your state on purpose rather than being carried by it.
That is a skill, and like any skill it is built through repetition, not insight. Knowing about it changes nothing. Practicing it changes everything.
Athletes train it because they have to. When the game is on the line, the physical preparation is already done. What is left is whether they can regulate themselves in the moment. So they practice that the same way they practice everything else.
Here is what almost nobody tells you. You need it more than they do.
An athlete performs under pressure for a few hours a week. You live under it constantly. Work, family, the things you carry that nobody sees. And nobody ever taught you how to train for that.
WHY THIS IS NOT NEW
Two thousand years ahead of the trend.
Mental fitness is being marketed right now as though it were just invented. It was not.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has been built on this principle for two thousand years. Its entire purpose is to balance Qi, the vital life force moving through your body, so that your body actually functions the way it was designed to.
Qi is not mystical. Think of it as the current everything runs on. When it moves freely, you have energy, your digestion works, you sleep, you recover, you think clearly, and you feel like yourself. When it stops moving freely, all of that degrades, and it degrades in both directions at once.
Because in Chinese medicine, the physical and the mental are not two systems. They are one.
This is not a metaphor and it is not a philosophy. It is the foundational observation the entire medicine is built on. What happens in your mind is happening in your body at the same time, in the same place, through the same current.
HERE IS THE PART THAT MATTERS
Ignoring the signals creates blockages.
Your body is constantly reporting. Tension you have stopped noticing. Sleep that broke a while ago. Digestion that is off. A shorter fuse than you used to have. Fatigue that rest does not touch.
Those are signals. They are information, arriving early, while there is still a great deal that can be done with them.
And when you override them, which is what most of us were trained to do, the Qi does not simply keep moving. It stalls. That stall is a blockage, and a blockage does not stay in one place.
It shows up in your body as pain, fatigue, poor recovery, and illness. It shows up in your mind as anxiety, irritability, and an inability to focus or settle. Same blockage. Two faces.
Which is why treating only one side leaves you frustrated. You address the body and the mind pulls it back. You address the mind and the body will not cooperate. You have to do both, and they have to be aligned.
THE PRINCIPLE, IN ONE LINE Alignment of your physical and mental fitness is the key to vitality and longevity. Not one or the other. Both, moving together.
THE METHOD
The Duality Switch Moment
This is what I use with my athletes, with my clinical patients, and with the executives and high performers I work with remotely. It is the same method regardless of who is sitting in front of me, because the mechanism is the same.
Chinese medicine is built on duality. Nothing you feel is inherently good or bad. It is information, and the meaning gets assigned afterward, by you.
So when the signal arrives, whether that is the racing heart before you present, the tension before a hard conversation, the frustration that has nowhere to go, or the ache that shows up every time you push a little harder, you do not fight it and you do not wait for it to pass.
You use it. That sensation is the doorway, and it opens every single time.
How it works:
• Notice it. The signal, wherever it lands. Heart, chest, jaw, shoulders, gut. Do not push it away.
• Name what is attached to it. Frustration, fear, pressure, grief. Naming it is what stops it running underneath everything unexamined.
• Thank it. This sounds soft and it is not. That sensation just told you exactly where the blockage is, which is information you could not have gotten any other way.
• Flip the switch. Choose the state you are going into, say it out loud in your own words, and move your body with it. Breath low, shoulders down, jaw open.
Repetition is what makes this available under pressure. A switch you have practiced fifty times is there when you need it. A switch you read about once is not.
That is mental fitness. It is not a feeling. It is a rep.
START TONIGHT
Legs up the wall, ten minutes

If you do one thing from this entire page, do this.
Ninety percent of my athletes do this twice a day. Before bed, and at the start of the day.
Lie on your back with your hips close to a wall and your legs straight up it. Arms out to the sides, bent at ninety degrees, palms up and resting on the floor. Like a goal post.
Ten minutes. Breathe low into your belly. That is the whole thing.
WHY THIS ONE The legs decompress your spine and reverse the flow that gravity has been driving all day, which supports circulation and recovery in a way almost nothing else does this easily. The goal post arms open your chest and the front of your shoulders, which is where most of us hold the day. And the position itself brings your nervous system down out of alert, which is where deep recovery actually happens.
But here is the real reason my athletes do it, and it is not the physical part.
Ten minutes with nothing to do is ten minutes where you can finally hear what your body has been trying to tell you.
You cannot listen while you are moving, producing, scrolling, and solving. The signals are there all day. You are simply too loud to receive them.
This is the practice that makes the rest of it possible. It is where you reconnect physically and mentally with yourself, and where you get quiet enough to notice what is actually going on inside you.
Before bed, it lets the day settle and prepares you to sleep. At the start of the day, it tells you what you are working with before the world starts making demands.
YOUR ROUTINE IS NOT WRONG. IT IS INCOMPLETE. Keep lifting. Keep running. Keep doing what you are doing physically. Then add ten minutes on the floor with your legs up the wall, and start listening to what comes up. That is where mental fitness begins, and it is the half of the equation almost nobody is training.
