Sharing your bed with menopause

Condition

A 48-year-old female presented with severe perimenopause symptoms over two years, including insomnia, hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, hair loss, decreased motivation, and emotional intensity. She had tried HRT, supplements, and lifestyle interventions with limited success, affecting her work, family life, and overall quality of life.

Findings

Assessment revealed that lifestyle, diet, and stress were amplifying normal hormonal fluctuations. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, these disturbances often reflect imbalances in Yin and Yang, as well as the Heart, Kidney, and Liver Meridians, which govern heat regulation, emotions, and sleep.

Treatment Plan

A multi-faceted TCM plan was implemented:

Acupuncture: Twice-weekly sessions targeting Yin nourishment, heat reduction, and Meridian balance
Herbal medicine: Customized formulas to support sleep, reduce internal heat, and stabilize emotions
Food therapy: Dietary adjustments to nourish Yin and cool internal heat, including cucumber water, pears, and honey-lemon tea
Lifestyle adjustments: Setting boundaries around work and social obligations to preserve energy

Outcome

After an initial adjustment period, the patient reported a marked reduction in night sweats and hot flashes. Sleep improved, irritability decreased, and motivation and emotional well-being increased. She continues periodic treatments and lifestyle adjustments to maintain balance and health.

Clinical Insight

This case demonstrates how TCM addresses perimenopause as a systemic issue. Integrating acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary guidance, and lifestyle adjustments can restore balance, reduce symptoms, and improve sleep and emotional health, enhancing overall quality of life.
