A competitive youth soccer athlete (Summer 2024) presented with performance anxiety following a heat-related incident during training. While preparing for elite team tryouts, the athlete overexerted himself on a warm day in Minnesota, resulting in overheating and loss of consciousness. After a brief recovery period, he began experiencing recurring panic-like symptoms upon returning to the field, despite no physiological signs of overheating.
Medical evaluation by a primary care physician ruled out underlying physical conditions, and psychological support was recommended. Recognizing both the physical and emotional components of the condition, the family sought integrative care.
Assessment indicated a trauma response in which the initial heat event became neurologically and physically conditioned to the athletic environment, triggering anxiety symptoms upon return to play. A focused, short-term treatment plan was implemented over two weeks (five sessions), incorporating acupuncture, tuning fork therapy, cupping, and mindset coaching.
Treatment emphasized nervous system regulation, clearing meridian stagnation associated with the initial event, reducing perceived internal heat, and reframing the athlete’s stress response. The athlete initially expressed hesitation toward acupuncture but tolerated a minimal-point approach effectively.
Following treatment, the athlete reported significant reduction in anxiety symptoms and successfully returned to the field. He completed tryouts and earned a position on the elite team, with no recurrence of panic episodes reported post-treatment.
