Condition
A 78-year-old patient presented with disrupted sleep that began 10 months prior. Once a deep, restful sleeper, she now experienced difficulty falling asleep, frequent tossing and turning, and waking in panic from vivid dreams. These disturbances were affecting her overall well-being.
Initial assessment revealed no major life stressors; she enjoyed a fulfilling life with family and a new partner. However, subtle pre-sleep worry about her granddaughter—her first grandchild away at college—was contributing to emotional arousal and insomnia. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, imbalances in the Heart and Spleen Meridians, which govern both sleep and worry, were identified as key contributors.
A TCM-centered plan was implemented, including acupuncture twice weekly and individualized herbal formulas to calm the mind and support restorative sleep. In addition, a journaling exercise helped the patient distinguish between worry and concern, and direct communication with her granddaughter provided reassurance.
The combination of TCM therapies and cognitive reframing restored healthy sleep patterns. The patient now sleeps soundly and has applied the same approach with other grandchildren as they transition to college.
This case demonstrates how integrative TCM therapies, when combined with mindful awareness of subconscious thought patterns, can effectively treat insomnia by addressing both physiological and emotional roots.
